From January 2025, a new Domestic Tourism Statistics (DoTS) collection replaced the National Visitors Survey (NVS). See changes to the Australian resident tourism statistics collection in 2025

March quarter 2026

The DoTS results provide data on how Australian residents travel within Australia. You can find national, state and territory results for the:

  • number of trips taken
  • nights spent on a trip
  • amount spent on a trip.

Unless we say otherwise, we compared the summary results for the March quarter 2026 to the March quarter 2025.

Domestic overnight trips and spend key results

Overnight domestic tourism results show a similar level of trips and nights but slightly stronger spend when compared with the same period last year. Results were supported by stronger results in the month of March 2026 when compared with the weak March results last year due to the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

In the March quarter 2026, Australians spent:

  • $8.5 billion on accommodation
  • $4.5 billion on takeaway and restaurant meals
  • $4.1 billion on domestic airfares
  • $3.2 billion on petrol
  • $1.8 billion on groceries and self catering.

Notes on the data

  • Results prior to 2025 are backcast and adjusted to account for differences in methodology between the National Visitor Survey (NVS) and the new Domestic Tourism Statistics which came into effect January 2025. Caution should be used when interpreting comparisons to the backcast data.
  • Following a review of the first year of DoTS data, the allocation of interstate and intrastate expenditure has been adjusted to better align with historical treatment used under the National Visitor Survey. This has resulted in an increase in intrastate expenditure and decrease in interstate expenditure. Overall state and regional expenditure results remain unchanged.
  • Following the completion of a full year of DoTS data collection, the 2019–2024 backcast estimates have been revised to ensure robustness and consistency. The revisions, which have been published alongside the March quarter 2026 release, bring the backcast series into closer alignment with DoTS trends, better reflecting the methodological change.
